Give a gift, change a life on #GivingTuesday

For more than 60 years, World Relief has empowered the local church to serve the most vulnerable— children orphaned by disease, women widowed by conflicts, families devastated by natural disasters and refugees relocated to new countries. Each year, World Relief publishes the Catalog of Hope , a holiday gift catalog featuring practical gifts that empower the recipients to, in turn, give to their children, families and communities, helping to break the cycle of poverty and inspire hope among those who need it most. This year, as part of its integrated outreach plan, World Relief is kicking off its social campaign around #GivingTuesday to help raise awareness and promote the Catalog of Hope throughout the holiday season. …Read More

Literacy is a Survival Skill

“Last month, I taught my students about prepositions: on, under, over, etc. Today, one student asked me to review the corrections she made to her daughter’s homework, which focused on prepositions. They were perfect. Merida said that she remembered my lesson, and based on her new knowledge, she made the corrections and even helped her daughter to further understand prepositions!” – Shani Brown, Literacy Council of Northern Virginia AmeriCorps member and teacher Can you imagine not being able to help your young child with homework? Or asking your child to help you pay bills or translate at the doctor’s office? The ability to read is so easy for us to overlook, because life without it is so hard to conceive. Yet Merida’s story is…Read More

Why build a community?

Why build a community?

The following is a post from  J. Rudy Flesher, #GivingTuesdayPHL Coordinator. To keep up with #GivingTuesday University posts from our experts and cohort organizations, and with curated tips and resources to help your organization succeed on #GivingTuesday, like our Facebook page . #GivingTuesdayPHL has been working since February to widen and deepen the impact of #GivingTuesday in Philadelphia. We have pooled community resources and contacts, created special events to engage businesses and nonprofits, and will receive a Mayoral proclamation recognizing the day. At fewer than thirty days out from #GivingTuesday, I don’t expect new state, county, or city wide initiatives to spring up in that time. However,…Read More

To Overlay or not to Overlay?

To keep up with #GivingTuesday University posts from our experts and cohort organizations, and with curated tips and resources to help your organization succeed on #GivingTuesday, like our  Facebook page . How do you grab your audience’s attention when they come to your website? How do you let them know it’s important to donate to your organization? And once they’re on your donation page, how do you make sure they complete their donation successfully? Website overlays (aka Splash Pages) can help solve these problems. They allow you to highlight your most important content or ask and, when done right, are significantly more successful at driving action (like collecting email addresses or soliciting…Read More

Tips for Engaging Millennial Donors

Tips for Engaging Millennial Donors

Did you know that if every Millennial in the U.S. donated 1% of his or her income to philanthropy, it would result in $16 billion raised for charity each year? Millennials, born between 1980 and 2000, are considered to be a generation with a strong social conscience. We helped shift public opinion on hot button issues such as gay marriage and immigration reform and nearly three-quarters of us volunteered in 2012, yet less than 40% of Millennials reported donating $25 or more to philanthropy annually. How can you translate this passion for civic engagement into philanthropic giving? · Keep it social: We do everything with our friends, and then post about it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Go beyond well-maintained social…Read More
